IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

IBS, as the name suggests, is a disorder related to the bowel. Bowel problems are usually caused by digestive issues or changes in food hygiene conditions etc. IBS generally occurs without warning but sometimes an intestinal infection can be a possible cause for IBS to occur. This condition not only interferes with the day to day life of an individual, but also can cause a patient suffering from IBS to be unable to travel even short distances and be bed ridden or house ridden. IBS manifests itself in different ways in different people, some people suffering from IBS have no symptoms or mild symptoms, while some patients suffering from IBS show severe symptoms. It's intensity(occurrence of symptoms) depends on the type of foods that are consumed. Due to this patients suffering from IBS are told to follow a particular diet without deviation. According to some studies, it was concluded that a decrease in foods with IgG lead to a noticeable decrease in symptoms and increased the quality of life, while another similar study concluded that elimination of IgG foods lead to a 44% decrease in abdominal pain and 42% decrease in overall IBS symptoms.

Chronic gastrointestinal (GI) disorders like stomach ache, bloating, diarrhoea, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and Crohn's disease (CD) and the associated tiredness are often triggered off by food hypersensitivities. Typical among them are the IgG food allergies caused by substances called Immunoglobulins G produced as a reaction to certain foods. Two common GI disorders are IBS and CD.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a distressing condition which prevents people from working peacefully, attending social events or even travelling short distances.

While some patients have mild IBS, others endure severe complaints that increase with the passage of time and affect quality of life.

Diagnosis and Causes of IBS

There is no known diagnostic method for IBS and the method of exclusion is used to diagnose it. This means that doctors investigate whether there are underlying diseases responsible for the symptoms of IBS.

There are no clear-cut causes of IBS. However, a low-grade inflammatory condition caused by the elevated levels of specific IgG antibodies is considered as a possible trigger.

Scientific approach to IBS and IgG

If the symptoms of IBS are the result of an IgG food allergy, then an IgG test like ImuPro can be carried out to isolate the problematic food. An elimination diet based on the test result can greatly decrease IBS discomfort. The nutritional guidelines can help the patient to still enjoy meals.

Treatment consists of medication like stool softeners, laxatives that control the symptoms. Since consumption of foods is linked to the symptoms, afflicted people often end up with complicated and restrictive diet plans.

Several studies have linked the presence of food allergy induced elevated IgG antibodies in the body and IBS. A study entitled "Food elimination based on IgG antibodies in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: a randomised controlled trial", Atkinson et al. 2003 (Gut 2004; 53: 1459-1464) carried out for 12 weeks on a group of patients having a mild form of IBS with no complaints of Celiac disease or lactose intolerance. One group was on a sham diet and the other on a diet free of foods with a high IgG. The patients of this group showed significant improvement in their IBS symptoms.

Another study called "The value of eliminating foods according to food-specific Immunoglobulin G antibodies in Irritable Bowel Syndrome with diarrhoea" by Hon Guo et al. 2010 (The Journal of International Medical Research 2012; 40:204-210) also had similar conclusions.
